Coral reefs are fragile ecosystems, sensitive to long-term climate change as they can only tolerate a narrow temperature range. When ocean temperatures get too high, corals turn white, or 'bleach,' and eventually die.
Average temperatures have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degrees Centigrade) around the world since 1880.
