They are a bottom dwelling species found in sandy bays, tidal flats, brackish lagoons and sea grass flats. Sadly, they are often accidentally caught in nets intended for other fish– a threat known as bycatch. Their maximum disk width is about 2 metres wide, and some females live to around 29 years.
