GLOBAL WARMING - FASCINATING FACTS
Coral reefs are fragile ecosystems, sensitive to long-term climate change as they can only tolerate a narrow temperature range. When ocean temperatures get too high, corals turn white, or 'bleach,' and eventually die.
Average temperatures have climbed 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 degrees Centigrade) around the world since 1880.
The rate of warming is increasing. The last two decades of the 20th Century were the hottest in 400 years.
Arctic ice is rapidly disappearing and the region may have its first completely ice-free summer by 2040 or earlier.
