The goal of Nature’s SAFE is not to resurrect extinct species, but to prevent their extinction in the first place. It achieves this by partnering with zoos, wildlife parks and aquariums to preserve the genetic heritage of animals under their care. Nature's SAFE have safely cryopreserved samples from over 350 different species so far in their quest to save animals from extinction.
Nature's SAFE is a living biobank set up as a safeguard for our planet's wildlife. Over 18,000 animal species are at risk of extinction. We are in a race against time to preserve vital genetics that can support breeding programmes to enable species survival. They use advanced science to preserve cells in a living state and ensure a future for at-risk species. They preserve reproductive cells and tissues in a way that ensures their viability for future regeneration. They can then be used to restore genetic diversity to animal populations where it would have otherwise been lost.
The Oceanarium has become Nature SAFE'S 100th partner! After an animal passes, or during routine veterinary procedures such as castration, Nature's SAFE work alongside veterinarians to secure cells and cell tissues to store in their biobank. Each conservation partner maintains ownership of all samples they have stored in their biobank. For more information, please visit their website here.
