The Big Fish Campaign

The Oceanarium continues to support The Big Fish Campaign.

AIMS TO

The Big Fish Campaign aims to educate the public on detrimental issues surrounding the purchase of certain species of fish for home aquariums. Many species can outgrow a small tank very quickly.

FOCUSES ON

The Big Fish campaign, initiated by BIAZA, addresses this issue, aiming to promote responsible pet ownership and animal welfare. The campaign highlights the welfare implications of keeping fish in inadequate conditions as they grow, emphasizing the importance of undertaking sufficient research before acquiring a pet. Despite the misconception that fish will only grow to the size of their tank, this is untrue and can lead to health problems for the animal. With limited space in public aquariums and rescue organizations, it's essential for pet stores to support the campaign by providing accurate information and stocking species suitable for home aquariums. Prospective buyers are urged to consider the welfare of the animals they wish to own, including their maximum size, tank requirements, and care needs, to ensure a happy and healthy life for their pets.

OCEANARIUM PARTNERSHIP

The Oceanarium has been continuing to support this since 2007 and now strives to promote responsible pet ownership by partnering with additional campaigns such as #ShareSavvy. Read more about that here

All the Oceanarium’s Amazon residents were originally pets, and this includes our resident Pacus, who can grow almost a metre long! Since opening we have rescued hundreds of animals, including many reptiles, and other fish species.
